Tonight is the big fundraiser that I have had the privilege to work on for our community. It is a Black Tie event for the Hospital and the theme is Great Gatsby! Now the sample I am showing you today is not the one that I will be giving to the ladies sitting at my table because to be honest with you…..(I do not have them done but I will snap some pictures of them for you)
My inspiration came from the SUPER talented UK Stampin' Up! Demonstrator, Sam Donald! She is simply amazing and I have been following her for a while. I adore her videos….love to hear her accent but most importantly, I love her work!
Please make sure that you watch her You Tube Video on the "in's and out's" of making this purse…but you will see that I left somethings off…and I added some things as well! She is one talented lady and I just love how she creates! Her flower is adorble but I wanted to keep it super simple.
Let's go….there are a couple of "must have's" when making this – the Top Note Die for sure…this is such a keeper and one that I use all around the year….click here to see the super cute project I did making the boxes for Hershey Nuggets…and naturally the Big Shot!

- Decide your color scheme in what you are looking for the "look" of your purse! Remember, when you score on DSP be careful that you do not push down too hard…it is thinner that our regular card stock!
- Take both pieces, your DSP and your card stock and run them through the big shot….LOVE IT that it will cut 2 at a time! Look at the "ticking marks" around the DSP one…simply take your paper snips and trim off the outer part and then adhere it to the base.(I use "green glue") – Set this aside!
- Take a piece of 4" X 11" of card stock (woot-woot"-you can make (2) purse bases from 1 sheet of paper) and place it long ways on the Simply Scored Scoring Tool (see picture below)
The 11" side – Score at 1", 5 1/4", 6 1/4" and 101/2"…flip it around (see picture below)
The 4" side – Score at 1"
- Take the piece BACK to the Simply Scored Scoring Tool on the long side (11") side and place your finger to the 2" mark as a guide and then take the scoring tool at the 1/2" notch and score just down to meet your finger at the 2" mark. Do the exact same at the 5 3/4" notch
- This is optional but I like the way it looks…take a piece of 10 1/2" X 1/4" piece of card stock and adhere it against the bottom…let it dry good before you use the bone folder to fold the creases!
YOU CAN DO THIS….IT REALLY IS EASY….HANG TIGHT!
- Take a ruler and go to the area where you just went down to the 2" mark and use the ruler as your guide to make a triangle….(It will make sense to you – trust me)
- You only need 2 strips of sticky strip (see pictures) – 1st peel off the short side and adhere and then "pinch in" the sides…(now it's making sense…right?!?!)
- Peel off the bottom and PRESTO – you made a clutch!
- To the Top Note – here is a tip…I like to "flip it over" so you are not scoring on the DSP side as it is thinner – simply line the "points" up to a "groove" in the Simply Scoring Tool and score a straight line – now you can use the bone folder to give it a good crease!
- Take the back part of the top note and adhere it to the back…I used the "green glue" as I love and appreciate the "wiggle" room it gives for me to get it "just right" – let it set up and dry!
I know that Sam used magnets but I chose to used simple Velcro dots! I purchased them at Jo Ann's for around $1.50 for 12 sets!. I found that these worked great for me and if you open and close the Velcro….it will not be too tight!
- To dress my purse up a bit, I took the scalloped Circle punch, a vintage faceted button and threaded the NEW in color Satin Stitched Ribbon thru….tied a simple "Susan knot" adhered it to the scalloped circle with glue dots and woot-woot!
Well…I think that between watching Sam's GREAT video and my take on how I made this "clutch" I hope that you are inspired to make a purse! I promise that I will share with you the ones I make for the ladies at my table!
When I showed John, he naturally said…"It's cute"…then he said – "What can you put in it?" – Well…lipstick fits great…mints fit great….oh heck, it's just so darn tootin' cute – who cares what fits in it!
Well…here is my "feel good" for the day about my Mom..she always loves clutches and I know if she was with us…she would be my best critic and say…"make it with this paper….let's add pearls….wow – this is so cute"
My Mom loved to watch the Academy Awards…well should I say, she liked looking at the dresses, the jewelry and the purses that the actresses wore! I will never forget that we went to New York together and we met in Baltimore to take the train up… she was not "thrilled" with how I was dressed as I had a pair of jeans on, a nice top and I looked fine…and here she was in a skirt and heels.
When I asked her why in the world are you so dressed up she said, "When we get there you will see, you will see ladies in their Channel Suits and beautiful dresses etc…" – well it is clear that my Mom had not been to New York for 30+ years…when we checked in to the hotel – she quickly changed!
Please so not forget to leave me another "Mom" memory today….
you'll get another chance to win the blog candy!
If you are more comfortable with leaving me an email, I totally understand – my heart has been filled with such touching stories…memory lane is the best!
Again, thanks for bring here today…..think of me today as it is a busy day for the event and let's hope the rain holds off!
Until tomorrow!

This is very cute. I can think of a few people I will make it for. Send pics of you and John too. Have a great time. 🙂
Good luck with your event Susan.
I also follow Sam Donald, and you are right, she is a very talented lady (with a super accent!).
I remember the contents of my Moms purse when I was young. Always Kleenex, candy and other stuff. Most of all I remember when she was given change while shopping it never made it back into her wallet. Floating around in there was always lots of change to buy penny candy with and even paper bills. I’m surprised she didn’t lose more money than she did!
Hugs,
Michelle
Such a cute little purse! I remember my Mom and I passing time in the evenings playing cards and laughing the whole time. It was such fun…(She is 87 now and can’t see so well to play anymore.) Great memories though.
How cute! I’ve made a similar “clutch purse” but it didn’t have the room in it as yours does due to having made it with a gusset. Love it!! Another memory that is SU related but with my mother this time is her last visit. It was our first time in MANY years that we had actual quality time together. Just me and her. We spent two days in my dining room creating many cards as I taught her how to do cards with SU products. She LOVED creating and learning as well as spending time with her only daughter, me! 🙂
Looks like so much fun and easy too! Love the color combinations and possibilities to use them.
Cute clutch purses. Are you putting anything in yours? I remember one Thanksgiving weekend when I came home from college. My girlfriend, my Mom and I spent the day in the kitchen cooking all the foods that I couldn’t get at college. I would mention that I was tasting for…and my Mom would say, let’s fix it. What a fun day. Enjoy tonight, Susan.
The clutch purse you shared actually reminded me of a “grandmother memory”. My maternal grandmother always let me look through her purse so I would sit still in church when I was a young girl. Her purse always smelled like Juicy Fruit gum. If I behaved myself, she would give me a half-stick of Juicy Fruit after church!
Thanks for the chance to win blog candy. Cute purse. I remember my mom and I working on baking projects together.
I love the purse! I also follow Sam Donald aka ” Pootles”. She has such amazing 3D projects. My Mother is German with a heavy accent. I don’t notice it as I’ve grown up with it. I will never forget the time she and I were at a Deli counter, when I was in my teens, and the person behind the counter kept asking her to repeat what she said. After the third time repeating her deli order, I interrupted and said “I don’t know why you can’t plainly hear that she wants XYZ sliced, etc”. My mother looked at me and calmly said, “Dear, my accent is too heavy and people have problems understanding me.” I was totally dumbstruck. I said, “I don’t hear any accent!”.
Remembering past Mother’s Days…..one of my best memories of buying something on my own for my mother so long ago. I was given a little money and rode the bus to our downtown, looking for a Mother’s Day gift. Looked long and hard and came home with a plastic pot with a plastic geranium in it. I thought it was the best gift and can still remember how proud I was to give this to my mother from me!
Oh, too, too, too CUTE! I love it! Mama was an elementary school teacher and spent hours and hours on bulletin boards – cutting letters and borders and backgrounds. I loved to help – must be where I get my desire to cut and paste and STAMP!! Mama could also draw so often we received notes and tags with her sketches. And she created her own Christmas tags. I think of her whenever I create.
Cute project! Have to give it a try! My mom isn’t into stamping but likes to receive my projects!! I try to keep her in a few cards for her stash.
My mom is probably responsible for my love of crafting. Way back when I was little I remember her receiving a CRAFT KIT in the mail every month! Oh how we looked forward to that little brown box!
I remember my Mom loved purses and shoes. She would never go any where without her purse. She never had much money but always had a handkerchief a tape measure and paper to make notes.if she saw a dress she liked she would draw a picture of it go home and make it either for me or herself.
My mom has a beautiful clutch purse that she received as a gift from her aunt who lived in the “big” city, Chicago. She still uses it occasionally and it makes me smile.
wonderful little clutch. My memory for the day is: when I was young my grandparents had a farm and on the weekends we would go to it. My mom would make fried chicken and potato salad and we would have a picnic on the road side on the way to my grandparents farm. Mom would say up late and fry the chicken and make the potato salad. Yes we ate cold fried chicken 🙂 to this day I still like to fry my chicken in the evening and eat it the next day 🙂
Blessings to you Happy Mothers day
This reminds me of my great-grandma. She had 13 children & wasn’t wealthy for sure, but she had style! She had more shoes than anyone I’ve known til now! I remember visiting them in KY when we were on vacation. The spare bedroom had shelves all the way around the room & she had shoes on those shelves in their boxes all labeled. Black pumps, red flats, navy heels, etc & she had a purse in every color & many hats, too & she was always dressed so cute! I guess she was in her 70s then 🙂
Thanks for the chance at the goodies 🙂
Luv the clutch! I also follow Sam Donald. You BOTH are extremely talented 🙂 An early memory of my Mom was as a 4 year old girl and all of the fun we had coloring together, cutting paper and “creating” lots of things. As I grew older I enjoyed watching her do lots of crafting with her grandchildren and also neighbors” children. Some things you just never forget.
Ooops…Yesterday I forgot my memory(LOL..That is so true many days!) The days I became a mom were two of the happiest days of my life! The first time I was unprepared for the immediate overwhelming unconditional love that I felt the second I saw and held my son. Ten years later I was blessed again with my beautiful daughter. Celebrating Mother’s Day with my family each year is my favorite day!
Cute project! I’ll have to check out “Sam” and her videos!
Other people’s memories made me think of cooking with or for my mom. I remember making donuts after I got my Betty Crocker Cookbook when I was 12. I have never made donuts again! (I’m almost 48.) A few years later, we made fried chicken together. The kind of fried chicken you dip in a batter and deep fry. The chicken didn’t get done in the middle before the coating started burning. I guess the two of us didn’t fare too well with deep fat!
Then there was the time I had made a cake to take back to college. It was a recipe I made up at her house once. She had supplied all the ingredients for the cake, knowing I was taking it back with me. I had just finished and she said, “Let’s eat it. You can make another one!” And that is just what we did!
Have a great time at the fundraiser!
Cyberhugs!
My mother loved yellow roses, so this year I purchased a yellow rosebush for my yard so I can remember her with yellow roses all summer.
Such a cute idea and the colors are fabulous! My pre-school age daughter used to help my mother do dishes. She stood on a chair next to my mother. They called it “Bubbles”. I can still see them standing their together! Thanks for helping me remember these wonderful times!
Love your purse. My mother was very classy from her head to her toes. She had at least one purse for every occasion. I now use some of her purses so that I can take her with me.
What a perfect idea for Mother’s Day weekend. I think I may need to purchase the die first though. My mother would love this idea as she always loved purses (shoes too). Thanks for the project directions.
What adorable purses!!! Just love them. How fitting, I just received a beautiful Brighton butterfly clutch purse from my adorable fur babies for Mother’s Day. I know you are an animal lover also, so you will understand how special my girls are to me. We do not have human babies, but we are blessed with 2 of the most adorable shih tzu girls. I’ve had dogs my whole life, but they are the sweetest girls I have seen And they are FABULOUS shoppers. Of course my husband had to go to the store for them, and apparently they couldn’t agree on the adorable sea life bracelet or the purse, so they decided to get me both. I’m a very lucky Mom!
That clutch is just to cute. My granddaughter loves purses and will turn 16 in July. This would be a perfect gift for her with some girly stuff inside along with some money.
Growing up I never realized why my friends always liked to come to my house, when I got older I realized that it was because my parents were so much younger then their parents. My Mom didn’t work outside the home, but we raised a garden, beef, pork, and chickens which was very much needed with five kids and four of them boys. She taught me everything I know about canning and preserving food. Summer days were spent canning and talking, the times I remembered the best. Now that weare retired, we both head to Yuma in the winter and that is now my quality time with them, different RV parks and different friends, but have good times together in the sun
I would get to stay up late with my mom!! I am the oldest and the only girl, so that got me tons of special treatment. I would rub lotion on her feet and then I would brush her hair while she laid her head on my lap. I will never forget our special times together!!
Such an adorable little clutch purse, perfect for gift card, candy, etc. Love it!
Thanks for chance to win 😉
How cute! Took my sweet momma grocery shopping this morning. My day to sleep in but she wanted to go early so up I was and off we went. 😉
Your adorable clutch reminds me of how much my mom admired Audrey Hepburn. She was a wonderful actress and humanitarian. She always dressed and acted like a “Lady”. Classy all the way.
These are too cute! I think I would have died if I was at another table and saw these on your table! Now John, you should know by now that if it was made by us and so cute – who cares what we would put in it! We also know he is jealous because he didn’t get one! I am going to have to check out Sam’s site too!
Yes, my mom had clutches too. Sometimes she had one at church and I would rummage through it for the 1/2 of stick of Juicy Fruit and my pennies to put in the collection plate. Of course my crayons were in there and a little tablet to draw on. There would be a handkerchief that eventually gave way to the new fangled kleenex tissues. But, there would also be the minty smell from Double Mint gum. I didn’t like that because it would give me a stomach ache so the Juicy Fruit would be for me and my brother.
Oh the memories! Have a great time tonight. Looking forward to seeing the little clutches you made for the table!
That clutch is The Best! Thanks for sharing! When my oldest daughter was about 4 months old my mom and I went to the mall. I dropped her and the baby in the stroller off so I could find a parking spot. As I entered the mall there were people staring at my mom. My mom was sitting holding my daughter but what she didn’t realize was that my daughter had unbuttoned her blouse and it looked like my mom who was 70 years old was breast feeding! From then on my mom wore pullover tops!
These are so adorable Susan. I too have been following Sam. She is amazing!
My Mom’s FAVE author was Janet Evanovich. My Mom would always make these off the wall comments. Later in life, she finally got me to read Janet’s book. Then, I realized where all her funny, little quips came from. At one point, it was all, ‘It would take an act of Congress’, and her funny, little quips would change after each of Janet’s books she read.
I so miss my Mom!
Susan, this is outstanding! I love the design of this cute clutch and I can see this as a great gift card holder too. As for the memories of my Mom, where do I begin? She’s passed on now, in 2009, but she sure was a “tiger”. One of my favorite memories though is an old red and white checkered metal can, containing hundreds of buttons. She used to sew my clothes when I was a little girl, and I remember always going through those buttons as a kid, and just loving every minute of it. She had every shape, size and color of button you could imagine. When she passed, I made sure that can came home with me. I still go through it today. I love the buttons, and the memories of how she sewed my clothes and how I cried when I grew out of my favorite purple, corduroy jumper, complete with a horse and a leather saddle. I can still see that jumper today…. and I am now 64! Isn’t it funny what we remember? Anyway, Happy Mother’s Day to you and yours….and thanks for all the creative inspiration!
Beautiful purse, Susan! My Mom is no longer here but she would love to receive homemade cards.
My Mom always taught me to wear hats and gloves to church, preferably matching my dress.
Love the little purse!
I remember my mom telling me all about God and how He watches over me when I would be afraid of thunderstorms as a little girl. So glad He still watches over me!
Love the purse. My mom always loved purses and still does.
I love this clutch and can think of soooo many applications for it both for big girls and little girls. My mom adored purses, as she always said that you never had to worry about fitting into them. Enjoy your day!
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing such detailed instructions, Susan!!! 🙂 I can’t wait to try making those cute clutches!
I love thinking of how generous my mother is: with her time, love, and money!!!! Best of all, she does it from the goodness of her heart and not for the slightest bit of recognition. One thanksgiving she cooked a turkey with mashed potatoes, gravy, homemade stuffing, sweet potatoes and the works! She & my father were soooo excited as they brought it, along with bags of groceries, over to a patient (she worked in health care) who had fallen onto some hard times. They rang the bell, left it on her doorstep, & left. The following week when the patient came in and raved about the nice gesture, my mother never even let on that she had done it! She was just happy that she had enjoyed it! Giving for the sake of giving and how you would act even if no one were watching!!!
Happy Mother’s Day!!!!!
Crafty hugs,
Jennifer
