Good morning, Susan! Boy-howdy, do I wish I could do the sign-up bonus thingy right now!
One of my favorite Thanksgiving memories is marching in the city’s Thanksgiving Day parade with my Girl Scout troop. Then we went home for our yummy turkey dinner.
Have a great day!
Cyberhugs!
My favorite Thanksgiving memory was going to Italian friends in NJ. We lived in OH and as a 8-9 yr old I remember the trip there. But the best part was watching all the aunts and grandma’s in the kitchen cooking a feast for everyone. It was delicious and we were at the table for hours!!! I am 66 now but remember it like it was yesterday.
My favorite Thanksgiving memory was the year we opened our home to a 90 something year old missionary friend I met through Seminary and my son brought a coworker from Mexico who was away from his family for the holiday. It was a wonderful time sharing time with them.
My favorite memory is something we do each year (as do a lot of other families)…we go around the table and say what we are most thankful for. Why this is my favorite memory is because it is those who are the age extremes (young and old) who have the sweetest and most wonderful things to say. They help put all of life into perspective.
One Thanksgiving we were hosting I was so organized. The turkey was in the oven early in the morning and we were all up and dressed. We went to 9 a.m. Mass as a family. Afterwards our tradition was to go out to breakfast, which we did. It was a great feeling of everything was under control.
My favorite Thanksgiving memory is our first Thanksgiving as a married couple. My mom was in her last weeks of battling cancer and I took the leap and made dinner for both my husband’s and my parents. Never had made a turkey before much less a pie of any kind but all turned out well. Mom passed away six weeks later. Thanks for the opportunity to win the blog candy. Love your blog!
My favorite Thanksgiving memory is the year we cleared away all the Thanksgiving food and plates and decorated gingerbread houses. We were having such fun and then the electricity went off. We light candles and continued decorating! By the way, all the guys did all the clean up as we ladies decorated our houses. It was so fun!
Remember the liquid simmering potpourri heated on the stove top? One year while at my parent’s house, Mom had some simmering, but she also had some hot mulled cider somewhere else. I wanted more cider and grabbed the pan of potpourri not knowing what it was. You should have been there when I took my first gulp of it! “Mom, what is this?”, I asked! My mother has never been known to have additional aromas, so that surprised me even more!
My favorite memory is smelling the turkey roasting and watching the parades on t.v. when I was a girl.
Wow! I can’t believe I won your blog candy…so much fun! Thank you Susan! I lost my mom to cancer too (pancreatic)…very tough, but such wonderful memories. I can’t e-mail you through the link you provided because I don’t know how to set up Outlook Express! Would you mind e-mailing me at theoblatelife@ymail.com? Sorry for the inconvenience, someday I will have all this computer stuff mastered! Thanks again and Happy Advent!
Memorable but not favorite memory. My mother-in-law wanted me to make Indian pudding. Looked it up in the Joy of Cooking cookbook & honestly didn’t sound very good. Put the ingredients on the stove it boiled over like a volcano, rushed the pot to the sink, clogged the sink, the gook ruined my pot, the stuff that boiled over on the stove ruined the element, & we still didn’t have Indian pudding. My mother-in-law wanted me to do it again. I didn’t leave the stove this time & managed to load it into the car very carefully & then preceded to get my suede coat on & load the dog into the car. The dog decided she wanted to be in the front seat & jumped up & over right into the pudding.Shook her coat & now the inside of the car & my suede coat were covered with Indian pudding. Arrived at the In law with nothing but a story. By the way my sister in law only needed to bring pumpkin pie:)PS My Joy of Cooking cookbook has a comment to NEVER MAKE & to ask the cook about an Indian pudding story! Janet
Nothing too fancy for me, just have always cherished lounging around watching football, eating, sledding and eating some more.
After my Mom passed away my family decided we should do something different so we drove to Toronto and spent the weekend there. We went to see Phantom of the Opera and had a great time. On Thanksgiving we ate in the hotel and we all had different foods. It was a fun relaxing time and a nice regenerating family time.
I have to say “watching my son load his plate up not once but twice”. When there was no plate showing he then started loading higher and higher. I asked him if he would like another plate he said “no Mom, doing fine”. Needless to say he had no room for dessert…ya think?
wouldn’t say this is my favorite but most embarassing moment.
I’d been married for a few years and decided to have a thanksgiving dinner with my husband sister and her daughter to our house which in itself isn’t anything until it came to eat…………..I cooked everything to perfection but come to find out when put the turkey on the table to be carved it wasn’t a whole turkey it was one of those “hotel turkey”…..anotherwords just a big ole breast of turkey….no wings or legs!!! that was the joke of the year and I mean a year…I never heard the end of it…to this day it comes up every once in a while. let me tell you they never forgot! that’s why I stick to making cards for the holiday!

Family!!! Getting together with extended family.
My favorite Thanksgiving memory was the year we invited two boys from our local Army base to have Thanksgiving dinner with us. They were 19 years old and away from home for the first time. They were so glad to be at our home and boy did they eat.
Family, friends and good food. But most of all giving thanks for all I have been given.
Thanksgiving is the time of year to be thankful for what we have, with family being the most important! To see the little ones in awe of the turkey and the trimmings and to hear what they are thankful for puts it all into perspective.
I have always loved being with my family at thanksgiving. Each year spent with them is a blessing to me.
My favorite Thanksgiving memory was the year we had an ice storm and were without power for a week. Cooking Thanksgiving dinner for the family was a challenge, but the entire family got involved. My husband and then 13 year old son stayed up all night smoking our turkey. First time we had smoked a turkey and it was delicious. Have smoked our turkey several times, not every year though. The rest of the dinner was cooked on the gas BBQ grill and a little one burner camp stove. Everything turned out great. We had more laughs and togetherness that year. My daughter, who was 10 at the time, was upset when the power came back on the next day because the TV was turned on, family members dispersed to their rooms, etc. and our “quality family time” ended.
I will always remember my first Thanksgiving away from home – away from Mama – and she flew out to visit me just for the weekend – my first from scratch pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread – quiche for breakfast – Christmas tree shopping the next day …
One of my favorite memories is one of the first years we were away from all our families……we had moved to Colorado…..and were not making the trip back to Minnesota that year. We had what we called an “orphans” Thanksgiving. Anyone that did not have family visiting, all joined together to spend the holiday with each other. It was such a enjoyable day. The meal was a mixture of “traditional” dishes from different parts of the country. We enjoyed each story why they were “orphans” for the holiday & the fabulous food from each family’s traditional Thanksgiving meal. It is my favorite memory!
My favorite Thanksgiving memory was my husbands last, family all around the table and we were doing our “what I am thankful for”, his was that he was thankful for all the firemen and police that are working that day so he didn’t have to and could be with family (he was a paramedic). He worked Christmas that year, and died two days later. Now every year we add that to our thankful list. May you have a blessed holiday!
Thanksgiving is a time of family. Just sitting around watching the Thanksgiving parade is a warm and fuzzy memory.
The one I remember most is the year my Dad, Mom, brothers & sister, it was my first year to be married, were going to be in a play about a Thanksgiving family at church, with Pilgrim costumes and everything. Then one of my brothers was in a accident and died. We never had another Thanksgiving play at church after that.
Thanksgiving is a day for time to be spent with the family, but since my family lives far from us we spend it with close friends that also have no family close by. We have our Thanksgiving meal at the country club and then walk off all those calories with a long hike. More time spent with friends and getting some clean, fresh air and admiring all the wonders of our world, which we are so thankful for.
Maybe not my favorite…but memorable! I took over making the pumpkin pie that my sister-in-law had started. After a loooong time in the oven, we discovered I had not added the eggs! We managed to fix it…but I shall never never forget!!
When my Mom and I took our first Selfie. She was having such a rough time with her cooking and nothing was going right for her. So, I made her do a selfie and we laughed so hard the tears were flowing. It was just too funny how the pic turned out.
I have wonderful childhood memories of Thanksgiving with my dad’s side of the family. We would gather at Grandma or Granny’s house. There were always 30-40 relatives and it was a loud, fun time of food, foot ball and visiting with those we only saw on holidays.
My favorite memory is of a Thanksgiving dinner at my great Aunt’s house. I was probably six at the time. There was a bowl of olives, green and black, on the table right in front of me. Well, I thought they were for me, as in ALL for me. They were yummy. Nobody noticed a thing until my Great Aunt asked for someone to please pass the olives. There was one left. oops! My mom was so embarrassed that I had eaten all but one. Thanks for sharing your talents each day!
Hi Susan, My favorite thanksgiving experience is when we were celebrating our first thanksgiving, and I was hosting dinner for both of our families. My oven broke and the turkey was not nearly done. (this was 1973,) My
mother in law , (God bless her) was not happy that I was making dinner, but she was gracious. When my oven broke, top heating element fell down on turkey, my mother in law left without a word, I was shocked.
She returned 45 minutes later, with a complete dinner, including a turkey, that has been in a electric roaster, cooking slowly all day! She was all smiles, we had a lovely dinner that she cooked after all!
Family and watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This year we hosted for all of my husband’s family – it was special to also have my sister and her husband and my mom, plus my grown kids all here too. (30 total!)
As a child, my favorite part of Thanksgiving was breaking the turkey wishbone with my brother. The ‘winner’ helped Mom clear the table and clean up the kitchen. I always hoped to lose this contest, as then I had Dad’s undivided attention! Now, while I put away dinner leftovers and get dessert ready, my adult son has willingly taken on the chore of washing dishes, which gives the two of us a chance to talk (not easy with a houseful of family!).
I agree with many of the comments, family is the crucial piece of Thanksgiving. I have been very blessed with a loving family and on Thanksgiving day we spend it together making turkey, pies, and nachos for the football game.
We have so much to be thankful for & I love thanksgiving where we are reminded to be thankful! I remember my first Thanksgiving after I was married when I had my in laws all come–I couldn’t figure out why the pies were taking SOOO long–the pilot light had gone out & the house was filled with gas but since I was in there as it filled I didn’t notice! Thankfully I was able to use my mom’s stove to finish the baking & all was well 🙂
My most memorable Thanksgiving was quite a few years ago (about 25) and I had three young daughters. My father flew us down to N.J. to be with family for the holiday! My older sister took my two older girls into NYC to be on the sidelines of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade! My younger sister hosted the whole family in her beautiful new home! That was the last time we have all been together for Thanksgiving.
Congrats to Dawn! I loved her comment!
I am not sure what favorite memory I have of Thanksgiving as there were lots but the one that makes me smile is my current favorite! It was the last Thanksgiving before my brother went through a nasty divorce. My mom slaved over the turkey and all the trimmings. This time she was just a little too tired to mash potatoes for us all. I swear my brother and dad can eat 10 lbs of taters themselves. My middle nephew was pretty quiet usually and I think he was about 12 and really quite the eater. Mike was there too eating his fair share. So, my mom decided to make instant mashed potatoes! She still got out the mixer and added lots of butter and milk so they really did taste like the real deal! Only she and myself knew about it as I was stirring the gravy and saw her! Anyway, while we were eating John pipes up that he loves coming to this grandma’s because she makes the best real mashed potatoes ever! I looked at his plate – he had half of it covered in turkey and the other half was mashed potatoes and gravy. We were all laughing at his outburst and his plate but my mom and I really had the best last laugh!
