Hello and happy Saturday! I have a fun and different post for you today but as the title says–
Warning: it’s Addictive… Actually it’s SUPER addictive!
Last weekend on my fun with my friends weekend… We had a shoebox swap! I wanted to make a card that was very different…a new technique to both me and my “partners in crime” … something that was totally out-of-the-box!
I make no bones about it I simply adore Jennifer McGuire! She is such an inspiration to me and I always enjoy following her blog as well as watching her YouTube videos. Well, the truth to be told is…..I was trying to figure out what to do for my friends…It was Thursday afternoon and I saw that Jennifer had a new video out so naturally I watched it.
I was intrigued…actually so much that I thought – ” I should give this a try ” and that is what I did…..off to the store to pick up the products to make this technique. I was on an adventure and it was one that I am so glad that I tried.
You can CLICK HERE to see Jennifer’s post on this technique and then below I have the video for you to watch. I highly recommend you watching it as not only will you learn a ton…but the whole technique will make sense to you!
We had a ball….actually a BLAST playing with these inks. All rules are THROWN OUT THE WINDOW…as you can play, play , play and no two will look the same! You will see in my pictures that I have for you that I made….I preferred dropping the blending solution on to give a bokeh effect verses the paint brush…..
Here is an up close picture that will show you the depth and dimension that the various colors bring to the end result. It just is so much fun to see how they mix around and create a pattern of their own.
Anything goes….and that is what I adored about it. I just wish that you could have seen us… (5) 50+ women in Ramsey’s kitchen oohing and aahing over each others work….saying – add more drops…..now use the paint brush…..we had NO CLUE what we were doing but at the end we looked at each other and said….this is FUN!
Below are some of the masterpieces that I had fun with! The great thing is that you can use them for a big and bold backdrop or you can cut them with a die to make a super interesting focal point. There is no waste as you can always find a way to use the colorful scraps!
I think we all know that there are times That the camera does not do a photograph justice… And this is so true with the photos I have for you today.I wish you could hold one in your hand and tilt it back and forth to see not only the different textures but also the glimmer of the Gold and Silver throughout the patterns. It is just stunning and it is truly fun!
Just to give you a reference of size… The below was made with the very vanilla note cards and envelopes. Therefore the card size is 3.5″ x 5″. I used our Polka Dot Embossing Folder to add to this fun card.
I think this is simply stunning and you can see in the second picture a closer view of the details that I cut out. This die is from a company called Neat and Tangled. I love their products and you know me…..I have a super soft spot for sentiments….and this one makes a statement all on its own!
When was the last time you pulled this thinlet out? It is the Sunshine Wishes Thinlet and yep, it’s a keeper as again, I adore sentiments….and this beauty has 4 of them! I used it on the 1st card in the post as well as the one below.
Using the multipurpose sheets made stacking several of the “congrats” a breeze. This does give such depth and a WOW…instantly happens – well worth the effort! Under the “congrats” I did use a strip of vellum…this is a fabulous effect…..again, I wish that you could see it in person.
Well… There you go! A fun and different post with a technique that I highly suggest that you give it a try! Jennifer did a fabulous job listing the products that she used for this technique and even though we live in a little teeny tiny town… I was able to find all the products. Actually we have a “mom and pop” store in our town and it felt great to support them.
This you YUPO paper is so much fun to work with as it holds this ink and dries in a breeze. If you search for Alcohol Ink Techniques in You Tube, you will be shocked with how many different ideas and techniques there are using them. I look forward to more experimenting when BLACK BEAUTY flies off my arm! 😀
We used these HARD last week and we did not even make a dent in the bottles. A little goes a LONG way….and definitely get the gold and silver additives….they make the POP happen…..you will sit there and just tilt them back and forth with pride that YOU made this!
Have a great day and a great weekend.I hope I inspired you in a way that you can use products that we have with Stampin’ Up! as well as other products to make a work of art from your heart.
Please share a comment if you have tried this technique or if you have any questions and I will do my best to try to answer them. Remember… this was new to me as well and I have to say it was fun!
Love these beautiful cards, Susan. This is a new technique to me, but I love the look you get from using alcohol inks. I, too, think Jennifer McGuire is so talented. Enjoy your weekend.
Wow Susan, I love what you did with the notecard. What a great way to send a A quick notecard to someone special. We did have fun! Looking forward to the next time.
Love the finished products! I have tons of photos of all of us doing the technique. I will text them to you. (You need to add them on here…too funny!) I thought they would be blurry as we were laughing so hard! I love learning new techniques and this one was a keeper!!!
Ya’ll make me wish I lived in Maryland to join in the fun!
Beautiful background techniques and stunning results!
I was out gathering supplies the last 2 days to make my aunt a “class kit” as she has had fun joining me making cards. I picked up goodies of my own including some more alcohol inks and the mixatives (woo hoo!). Also the Yupo paper as I only have experience with gloss paper. I need to get brave and do some more with mine. You can also drop some colors individually in a palette tray and let them dry and rhthen en reactivate by using a paint brush dipped in the alcohol solution and paint on acetate.
I love how you pulled the amazing yupo artworks into cards!!! Spectacular! I am off to play some more!
Color me with some green alcohol ink and call me jealous (with a little blue and metallic mixed in)!
Susan, your post totally nailed this awesome technique and how much fun and creativity was had creating them. The cards you created are fantastic. I love how just using a little strip can transform a card to WOW!
I watched Jennifer’s video too! Funny enough, just last week I finally tried to use alcohol inks, made a couple of cards and have a partially finished post on my blog just waiting to get the pictures correct! Thanks for posting your enthusiastic cards and ideas.
Sounds like you had so much fun! Love the technique and your cards.
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Simply stunning!

Stunning my friend. Jennifer would be so proud.
I don’t know if I have ever seen a more beautiful technique and collection of ideas. This made my jaw drop, Susan!

I saw something on this a couple of weeks ago ,but even though I was tempted I thought I would put it on hold . THANK YOU for giving us all this wonderful info….and links …those adorable die cuts really are pulling at me . LOVE THEM !!
The best thing about this (even though I like Jennifer`s projects) is this is a SUSAN AND PALS thumbs up GOTTA TRY !!!
Love the look and it looks like a lot of fun, but as I remember I couldn’t tolerate the odor.
I absolutely adore this!!!!! Jennifer McGuire is one of my all time favorites as well and I saw this technique on her page as well. I might like yours better 🙂
