Birthday fun with minimal DSP!

Now is this fun or what! You all know that I love cards that are simple…but when I can create a card that I can make multiplies of in a jif, I do my own happy dance and usually…my audience just wags their tail…but I still smile! (heck, they are my best critics)

I know many of us start the New Year with many different resolutions or should I say, great intentions as heck…..no need to put stressful pressures….let’s just try to put that great intentions into a habit…as that’s how we can make a difference!

Birthdays are something we all have and something that many of us intend to be better at, sending Birthday cards! I am posting this week about Birthdays as that is one card that we all seem to use quite often and I hope that I will be able to put a little “spring in your step” to share and show you that there are ways to stay on top of it and develop a “stash of cards”

I love paper…because to me, paper and layers add an instant feel of specialness to a card and lets face it, paper is not that expensive but the layers DO make a difference…especially when you hold a card in your hand. We are so lucky that all of our papers and DSP match each and every time making the “color match game” a cinch!

Today I based my color palette from the Picture Perfect Party DSP collection. This is one of the newbies in the Occasions catalog and it is super unique to Stampin’ Up! as one side is an actually photo like image and the other is a fun print. I am more of the “fun print kinda gal” and these stripes….are just that FUN! I also love the fact that the size of this collection is a 6″ X 6″ square and you get (4) sheets of each design so you do have a lot of paper to work with if you are looking to make many of the same card!

Before we go on…there is one thing that I want you to remember with a paper pack like this…you can choose just about any paper within this collection and there will be another that will basically be….“in the same church… just a different pew” making it super easy to mix and match within a collection. Mixing and Matching is FUN…because Stampin’ Up! has taken the guess work out of it for us!

Both of the below Stamp sets are also newbie to our collection. The Bird Banter is sooooo on trend right now – if you shop with other stamp companies, you will see the “bird craze” everywhere and this stamp landed a home on Randall Lane because of the fun and unique sentiments and the fact that it is a photopolymer! DOUBLE WHAMY!

The later stamp, Birthday Wishes for You is SPOT ON with being a classic but look at that price…..just $12.00 – here comes a big WOOT – WOOT! The spacing in the “birthday” is a perfect way to add a fun pop of color without being too hard…as it is a breeze to color!

You know that I enjoy keeping things simple….so I have a stash of card stock already cut to 1/4 sheets so I can grab and go as I need to. I find that this saves me a bunch of time and lets face it – IT IS THE BASICS and you know how I feel about them!

After I stamped all of the images, I trimmed off the excess to make it work for todays card – it ended up to be a 4″ X 4″ area and then I matted with just a smidge larger (4 1/8″ X 4 1/8″) in Lemon Lime Twist…

You will see below in the post that I did use the STAMPARATUS to create this card and each time I use it….I enjoy it more and more….mainly because of the sheer ease, efficiency and being able to stamp with multiple stamps!

The Stampin’ Blends made it a cinch to color….they just glide over the paper and the NO STREAK of color is a dream. No worries about knowing how to blend, with these you get the best of both worldssimple one color coloring or use multiple makers and blend….just do what works and feels comfortable to YOU!

I know that this does not seem fair to tease you with talking about the Stamparatus but I just need to. I do have one and as I shared, I am lovin’ it! I do have both the MISTI and also the Tim Holtz Platform so I think I can give you great feed back with our product, the STAMPARATUS. This product will be available in the Annual Catalog in June and also for those that have pre-ordered it…..(your time will be soon)

The 2 plates make using multiple stamps for a project a dream machine. For todays card I used (4) different stamps…

  • The “Happy Birthday” word
  • The Bird
  • The Balloon
  • The Sentiment inside the card…(a little birdie told me it was your birthday)

Because I was able to have the (2) plates I was able to stamp my card with ease and precision without having to change and clean my stamps after each stamp. THIS IS the a game changer to the other stamp positioners that are on the market. I truly did not think that this would make such a big difference but you just wait and see….you will be amazed!

I know that this might be hard to see but look closely and then it will make sense….I “get it” that we get frustrated and just sad when we ruin paper if an image is not lined up properly…I cut a piece of Window Sheet to 4 1/4″ X 5 1/2″ (the size of an A-2 card) so as I stamp…I can first give it a trial run on the Window Sheet! You can easily clean it off and reuse it time and time again!

The other thing that I do it…put a BRIGHT color of Duct Tape  and then cut the tape to a point as I “pick me up-er” as I admit….it not only save “my nails” but it helps in not having these STRONG MAGNETS get stuck together! On the bottom of the STAMPARATUS there is a place to store your magnets and this Duct Tape on them does not effect the storage one bit!

I know that this is a LONG POST but hang in there as this is a great TIP to making this card…..as I said before, I adore paper and the POP of this DSP just makes the card FUN but the reality of it is that I used a wee bit of DSP…..let me break it down for you…

  • for the card….I used a 1/2″ and a 1/4″ of DSP for the card…YEP  – I just used 3/4″ in TOTAL!!!!
  • for the envelope….I used a 1 1/2″ strip of DSP

The below photo will help you better see….all you need to do is be creative with how you cut your paper. From a glance, it looks like I used a bunch of DSP but just think of how many cards you could make using this same DSP from a paper pack? I made up 8 cards in a jif….ready for Birthdays when I need a super cute card!

One more peek at this card…I know its amazing but I did not POP up anything on this card today (something that is rare for me) but I did add the Susan dashes and dots to give it my signature touch!

I did add some Wink of Stella over the balloon and bird, something that honestly I forget about but when you hold the card in your hand, it is the perfect amount of bling.

There you go…a super fun Birthday card to inspire you to create! These 2 stamps are a perfect addition to your stash as you can see the mileage you will get out of them and also mileage out of your DSP!

I will see you back on Wednesday with another Birthday card…..make it a great day and lets all have a fabulous week!

3 Thinlits + No Stampin = A FUN Result!

Happy Hump Day! Did the subject line peek your curiosity? Well, YEP….that is right – no stamping today…just die cuts and special ones at that as these 3 thinlits are free with a qualifying order of $100+ during Sale-A-Bration!

There is a stamp set, Amazing You that also coordinates with it but today I am focusing on just these 3 words….it is called the Celebrate You Thinlits I think that it makes a fun yet kinda dramatic look and feel, making it super special. I know that if I were to receive it, I would beam and also  oooo & ahhhh over it!

Below is a super short (under 2 minutes) video that the home office did about these 2 products…there are some amazing samples in there that will perk you up and then you will see where my inspiration came from, YEP….I cased a card!

Every Tuesday Stampin’ Up! shares weekly updates with Demos and then they also help us by sharing with us a weekly training piece to help us, inspire us and teach us focusing on a specific product. When I clicked on the email yesterday and saw the picture below I know that I needed to case it as it is truly a fantastic card!

First I adore a tone on tone and truth be told I like it best in White or Vanilla but I thought that might be hard to see in pictures so I went with my favorite Stampin’ Up! color…..lemon lime twist….(I can hear Chris R. right now making all sorts of faces as she does not care for this color…tee-hee-hee  😀 ) but me, I LOVE IT as it is big and bold and looks fantastic with black and white!

Now here is my take on this fun card! You can totally see the CASE that I was going for….the repetition of the word celebrate! I added some simple changes to share with you how you can see something that you love….tweak it a wee bit and make it work for you!

I do not know about you but…I have GOBS of Washi Tape….I buy it….but then I do not use it. I placed a thin piece of Washi Tape down the left side and POP….and think that it makes a huge difference as it pulls together the black sentiments plus the thin black thread that I placed behind the banner….do you agree?

You know me….I like to find ways to make this whole process we do fun and as simple as possible and truth be told…there are products out there that make it easier. Below you will see the Elmer’s Adhesive Spray. I have blogged about this before and even though I do not use it often, when I need to – it sure is great to have on hand.

You can purchase it from a craft store…I think I picked it up at Jo Ann Fabrics and there are a ton of different brands – I just went with good old Elmer’s as I figured – WHY NOT….that brand worked for use when we were kids at school…I just figured this was the “grown up version”

When I use spray adhesive I make sure that I spray it in a deep box so there is no chance of spray residue getting on my work area and I also like to use little piece of wax paper after each spray. I have found this to be super helpful in not having adhesive stick to the next thing you are going to spray (I hope that this makes sense) I then just throw the wax paper away and I can reuse the box the next time I need it.

This font of “amazing” is that indeed….just amazing! I do like the idea of having the 2 words in the same color family but also at the same time making them a bit different – this black and white dot is from the Petal Passion DSP collection. This offering of paper is over the top! I admit…I am going to be sad when it leaves at the end of this catalog but in the meantime….get used to seeing it as it is a keeper, each and every print!

I realize that there is just (2) colors, black and white to this collection but the contrast when you POP it with a color like I did today is just classic. You can also use your blends to color right on the paper to add a super dramatic look….you will see a post on that look in the future!

Check out in the picture below how I keep my Washi Tape. I use a simple ring clip  – I only do this with current Washi Tape collections so I can easily spot the current ones. The others that are retired I keep in a super cute basket in my work area….

You can see from the below picture that I simply used (3) additional items that most of us have….and in using these in a minimal way made an impact on the card! My little dots around the banner and also on my envelope flap just added that simple yet detailed touch that would certainly make the recipient smile….remember, it’s the little things that people remember!

One last peek of this fun card. It really did not take a bunch of time to do. The longest part was cutting out the word 5 times and the spray adhesive made it a cinch to adhere!

I first thought that I needed to do a bunch of measuring to make sure that everything was just right in the spacing and then I thought to myself…KEEP IT SIMPLE….and that is what I did!

I started with the center celebrate words (that was mainly under the banner) and then just added above and below….it’s not perfect but IT WORKS! After making one of these…I thought – WOW…..I need to do this with other sentiment words that I have!

Enjoy your day….and we are having what feels like a heat wave on the East Coast…..now it is not that warm out BUT it is a heck of a lot better than the sheer bitterness we have been having….I am even thinking about taking a nice long walk!

Below you will see the items that I used to make this fun card and I know that there are many of you that have been “eyeing up” this framelit offering. I agree with Donna from the video….Sale-A-Bration IS the sweetest time of the year for us crazed Stampin’ Up! lovers!

A party of furry friends!

Good Morning and do I have a cutie for you today! I just smile when I see this stamp set….and then when I say the name of it – We Must Celebrate ..I just giggle!!!  I envision this foursome to be holding up banner flags saying hooray….look at us! It is a new kid on the block and it is super sweet!!!

I was going to share this with you yesterday….but I have been in the trenches….the Product Share Trenches and WOW – I have dug a huge dent into the pile of paper and goodies….Many have shipped and the rest will go out on Monday. If you thought you were in my first wave of the Product Share and you did not receive a confirmation and or Pay Pal Invoice….please email me as they all went out on  Catalog Launch Day!

Below is the stamp images…aren’t they just the sweetest!?!? Do you have a favorite? I think I am taken to the Bear and the Silly Squirrel. The sentiments are super sweet and you all know that I am a lover of a great sentiment. On the inside of this card I simply stamped the Happy Birthday sentiment…a perfect clean and simple card!

This card is so straightforward for you but I do want to point out some things I have learned from making it. This is a card that I went ahead and stamped up 12 of and then just put the extras in one of our clear envelopes to color at a later date. I invite you to do this when you are stamping an image like this as it is a fun thing to do when you are on the go!

The way that I look at it is….you have the stamp and ink out…why not just go ahead and stamp many of the same image so you are ready to color when you have the time! Coloring is so fun to do while you are watching a movie or simply waiting somewhere – I use these Zippered Mesh Bags for sooooo many things but one thing I would suggest if you get any…..BUY A TON OF THEM as trust me, they will disappear.

I alway have a pile of them as when the peeps come home – they seem to raid my stash as they truly are handy for many on the go things that we do or to simply keep us organized. If I am somewhere and I pull one of them out….I can almost guarantee I will have someone ask me where I got them. They are so darn affordable and I will say that I use all 3 sizes! Ok – enough on this but you know I love organizational tips for you an goodies to help life be easier!

I do love our Blends. Here is a tip that I have been doing lately. When I use the Stampin’ Blends I am finding that I am preferring using the regular (thinner) Whisper White Card Stock I admit, ever since Stampin’ Up! came out with the Thick Whisper White Card Stock I have kept a skeleton amount of the thinner but I am finding that I am reaching for it more and more when using the Blends.

Perhaps it is just a personal preference but I find that the Blends glide over the paper perfectly. The #1 reason that I adore the Blends is the simple fact of no lines showing!!!! To me, it is just simply the best to have a coloring product that just glides and gives a smooth and even coverage.

I know that many of you worry about knowing how to “blend” colors together…but hear me out – the 1st thing for you to master is just simply feeling comfortable with the coverage of the markers. I invite you to NOT WORRY about mastering the “blending” aspect of this product…rather embrace the fact that there are 12 color families – hence you have 24 different colors to play with!

The blending will come in time and it will only happen with one concept….that is PRACTICE!

I am just hoping that Stampin’ Up! keeps coming out with more and more colors. If I showed you how many Copic Markers I have you would say….a BIG – OH MY!!!! I just love the coloring result you get with an alcohol based marker but always remember to use the appropriate ink when stamping….use the Memento Black Ink as it is safe for the markers.

Did you notice the envelope love….I am still getting used to the new DSP offerings…but this one is one of the Sale-A-Bration FREEBIES….shown above. Trust me on this one….this picture does not do it justice as when I saw this picture I was not a fan of this paper but once I saw it in person….I thought of many projects that it would work for and heck – it is FREE….so who doesn’t love that!

Same drill as I always do….a 1/4″ strip of card stock and then a 2″ X 6″ piece of the DSP….adhere it and trim off the excess! This way I can get 12 envelope flaps out of (1) sheet of DSP! Works for me!

After I did my coloring fun and went to mat it onto the Sahara Sand….I thought it needed a bit more to POP…..so I simply used the stampin’ trimmer to cut a 1/4″ strip of paper and then matted that across the top and bottom of the colored image!

There you go…a super simple yet super fun card. I do enjoy working with a whimsical stamp set like this as I truly do not think it is for just the “young at heart” To me, it just conveys a FUN TIME and you could use a sentiment in the inside such as “We’re rooting for you” or “Sending well wishes”…just about anything would work!

Enjoy the day and stay warm…we are on day 3 of the horses being in the bard as it is just too darn bitter with the wind to go out! I have one miserable and super grumpy pig on my hands as Daisy simply hates the cold weather…..she is like a ground hog…..she would rather stay in her heated penthouse and just come out when it gets warmer.

Trust me, she grumbles at me when I push her out to go potty but she does what she needs to and then runs (well waddles) right back to the door to the heat! She really is not a fan of this weather!

I do hope that you can have some “crafting time”  over the weekend. I am going to be doing some and then switching to the product shares….a little of each makes Susan a happy stamper! Isn’t it just wonderful to know the simple tricks that make us happy…..I want to play stamps, paper & ink…John wants to watch football….and Daisy wants to sleep – life is great! 🙂

SNEAK PEEK….It’s Picture Perfect!!!

Good Morning and here is to a new week! YIKES….I have been here…there…and everywhere over the past 5 days and it has been great but I am in the “caveman ages” in getting in the groove! I have a classic “funny” for you at the end of the post…never a dull moment on Randall Lane!

I came home last night from being away and felt like a dog chasing its tail in trying to be productive in typing up a post for you that I simply said….tomorrow is a new day and sat with John and the pups as watched the Carol Burnett’s 50th Anniversary Show…..it was fabulous – did anyone else see it???…..Why can’t they make good old FUN shows like that! It was just the perfect evening!

I have a sneak peek for you today! I was excited that there are a couple of fantastic new Birthday Stamp Sets that are coming out in January with the Occasions Catalog and here is one for you today!

This is a photopolymer stamp…I am SUPER happy with that and the price point…just $17.00 and I am also SUPER happy with that! The thing that drew me to knowing that this would have a home on Randall Lane was the simplicity of it. When I see a stamp set that has great sentiments with a FUN FONT and also basic pieces that can build upon each other….I say SOLD!

My peeps sweetie’s Birthday was last week and I wanted a sweet card to make her sweet face smile! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED with this keeper of a card! Is this EASY or WHAT! Just think of the color combinations you could use….and YES – a great solution for those hard to make masculine cards!!!! YIPPEE-SKIPEE!

You really do not need me on this one but I know you like it when I share the dimensions. You will find the colors that I used at the end of the post but here is the quick run down of the dimensions.

  • Base 4 1/4″ square in Thick Whisper White
  • Powder Pink layer is 4″
  • Bermuda Bay layer is 3 7/8″
  • Whisper White layer is 3 3/4″ and scored on all 4 sides!

To pick the colors I just looked what was on my work area….then threw in a couple of more POPS and PRESTO….a fun card! To me, candles are like balloon and polka dots – they make me happy and smile!  🙂

To make the little “wick”, I simply took a black marker…super simple! I just adore the look of the scored line….again, a simple technique that literally takes seconds to do. I will say, I do like using the Simply Scored Board over the trimmer when doing these line as I feel they get a better and deeper score.

Here is the other reason that I like this stamp set….the sentiments are not only perfect and appropriate for the fronts of cards….but a blue ribbon winner for the insides as well!

Again, simple yet still fun and festive. I think that the whole color scheme that I chose for the card just screams a fun day. (I honestly think I am trying to forget that it is getting cold outside) 🙁

Well…there you go….a SIMPLE CARD that would be perfect for making someone smile on their special day!  I know that it sure did make Ashleigh smile and trust me….that is a beautiful smile!

I think I am in total denial with the retired list that was unveiled on December 1st. I honestly did not even print it off until last night (when I was chasing my tail) and it mad me sad ….another reason that I said….tomorrow is a new day! We all know it happens each and every year. It is the way that it is and an opportunity to take advantage of some great deals. CLICK HERE to see if there are any keepers for you.

In closing, here is a funny for you. We all know that my dear John is a keeper, truly a keeper…..well – when I was away and what did he do? Well….where do I begin….this is what happens when you leave your husband home for 4 days!

  • He bought 2 more cases of white lights…..has stapled lights all down the fence and it looks like a landing strip as I drove in the lane
  • He put these wreaths on every window of the house…and they are ones that I really do not like but I admit, they look nice
  • He went and picked a tree….(he is soooo picky about his tree) as he loves Christmas…. that James, Ashleigh and him went and cut down the perfect tree!!!!
  • He text me and asked what my password is for Amazon…..after I told him and then said why? He bought a nativity scene for the yard, I told you that he LOVES Christmas and also LOVES to decorate (which – I know….I am very GRATEFUL FOR) but I said – really….who in the world is ever going to see it?…..I loved his response…well the deer…the horses….the donkey…maybe the pig…and ME!
  • Here is the best….he texted me again and said….oh honey, we are getting 4 Alpacas on Monday!

You just have to love him! Never a dull moment….they are not here yet…and I really do not know if they are coming but he also said….don’t worry – you do not need to go get them…..they are being delivered! What can I say to that?????

YIKES….Calgon, take me away…..never dull around here – see what happens when the peeps leave the nest!!!! Have a GREAT DAY!!!!

A keeper, oh so versatile!

Happy Hump Day! I have a card for you today that I think will make you happy and also say…I could use this layout/design fro so many occasions!

When I was in Houston, the gal across from me created this layout (hers was the Happy Birthday one) and when she showed me her worked I perked up and said, I would love to take a picture of it and also CASE it! I just knew you all would love it.

To me, this is one of those cards that hold the test of time because they are a classic and also a card that you can use so many different color combinations /sentiments.

The frameits that are used are the Botanical Builder Framelits and they can still be found on the clearance rack (just $19.80), I was shocked when she shared with me that this is what she used as honestly, this was a set that I did not use often but trust me, I cranked out a bunch of these puppies!

I decided to give it a try with a Christmas Theme and I think it worked out….what do you think? You can see that the layout itself is very straightforward. All you need to do is cut out (3) of each of the elements.

The sentiment came from the Snowflake Sentiments Bundle and YES – I would get the bundle on this one as the framelits are over the top on this one….

Look at what you have and just make it work. You can see that the Birthday one used pearls for the accents….and for the Christmas one I used the wee bitty dots from the Owl Builder Punch with Red Glimmer to create the accent….just have fun!

I happen to adore the “movement” that the flowers give…you can pull them forward for a dramatic look or simply leave them flat!

Here is a tip….if you are watching a game…a movie etc – why not pull scraps that you have and go to town cutting away. Plop your Mr. Big right with you and get ahead of the game (ha-ha) as you will be so happy that you have elements cut and ready to rumble when you want to make a card,

Here is also something that I would do…I would make up a bunch of these at one time with different colors and simply leave off the sentiment so when you need a card….POOF……stamp the sentiment and you are good to go!

I think that it is very fair to say that we all have a copious amount of product and even if you do not have these framelits I am sure that you have a floral one that will do the trick. It’s all about the (3’s) – just taking 3 of the same elements and use that as your focal and go from there! It will never let you down!

I used easy-peasy glue dots to put this whole thing today. Not only does it work like a charm ii is sooooo darn fast! Remember, there are ALWAYS ways to make projects simpler.

Well, there you go… a super card that can go through the test of time. These are the types of cards that catch my fancy; I ask you, why do we complicate things so?

Well I am in air right now on my way to Salt Lake City. I am blessed that I have 4 team members and a new gal that is by herself that is joining our fun……after all – I am the very 1st person that loves to rescue dogs and the name that we call our team is the Top Dogs…..so of course my heart is always opening to welcome someone. (She is going to think we are crazy….but it will be fun!)

The 6 of us are going to have a fun time together. Last night we started the slumber party early at Ramsey’s as we needed to be at the airport by 5:15…we made it and we are excited to have a fun time!

I brought my big camera so I am hopeful to take some great pictures and of course I will share. You know me, I love to share with you and I truly wish that each and every one of you could be with us.

I just keep pinching myself that I feel so lucky to laugh, learn and make these amazing friendships with so many amazing and talented crafters. It is always fun and healthy to be with people that make you laugh, make you smile, simply make your day!

I will see you on Friday as I will share with you my swap card that I made. Trust me, it is a total “Susan card” being that it is super simple but I was tickled with it…..it’s a keeper and one that I am actually going to make more of to send.

Enjoy the day, make a memory and don’t forget how incredibly blest we are! 🙂
